A Reduced Basis Method for Evolution Schemes with Parameter-dependent Explicit Operators

چکیده
During the last decades, reduced basis (RB) methods have been developed to a wide methodology for model reduction of problems that are governed by parametrized partial differential equations (P2DEs ). In particular equations of elliptic and parabolic type for linear, low polynomial or monotonic nonlinearities have been treated successfully by RB methods using finite element schemes. Due to the characteristic offline-online decomposition, the reduced models often become suitable for a multi-query or real-time setting, where simulation results, such as field-variables or output estimates, can be approximated reliably and rapidly for varying parameters. In the current study, we address a certain class of time-dependent evolution schemes with explicit discretization operators that are arbitrarily parameter dependent. We extend the RB-methodology to these cases by applying the empirical interpolation method to localized discretization operators. The main technical ingredients are: (i) generation of a collateral reduced basis modelling the effects of the discretization operator under parameter variations in the offline-phase and (ii) an online simulation scheme based on a numerical subgrid and localized evaluations of the evolution operator. We formulate an a-posteriori error estimator for quantification of the resulting reduced simulation error. Numerical experiments on a parametrized convection problem, discretized with a finite volume scheme, demonstrate the applicability of the model reduction technique. We obtain a parametrized reduced model, which enables parameter variation with fast simulation response. We quantify the computational gain with respect to the non-reduced model and investigate the error convergence.

Water hammer simulation by explicit central finite difference methods in staggered grids
Four explicit finite difference schemes, including Lax-Friedrichs, Nessyahu-Tadmor, Lax-Wendroff and Lax-Wendroff with a nonlinear filter are applied to solve water hammer equations. The schemes solve the equations in a reservoir-pipe-valve with an instantaneous and gradual closure of the valve boundary. The computational results are compared with those of the method of characteristics (MOC), a...

The numerical solution of parametrized partial differential equations (P2DEs ) can be a very time-consuming task if many parameter constellations have to be simulated by high-resolution schemes. Such scenarios may occur in parameter studies, optimization, control, inverse problems or statistical analysis of a given P2DE . Reduced Basis (RB) methods allow to produce fast reduced models that are ...

In this manuscript, we consider the inverse problem for non self-adjoint Sturm--Liouville operator $-D^2+q$ with eigenparameter dependent boundary and discontinuity conditions inside a finite closed interval. We prove by defining a new Hilbert space and using spectral data of a kind, the potential function can be uniquely determined by a set of value of eigenfunctions at an interior point and p...
متن کاملInvestigation of Fluid-structure Interaction by Explicit Central Finite Difference Methods
Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) occurs when the dynamic water hammer forces; cause vibrations in the pipe wall. FSI in pipe systems due to Poisson and junction coupling has been the center of attention in recent years. It causes fluctuations in pressure heads and vibrations in the pipe wall. The governing equations of this phenomenon include a system of first order hyperbolic partial differen...
متن کاملReduced Basis Approximation for Nonlinear Parametrized Evolution Equations based on Empirical Operator Interpolation
We present a new approach to treat nonlinear operators in reduced basis approximations of parametrized evolution equations. Our approach is based on empirical interpolation of nonlinear differential operators and their Frechet derivatives. Efficient offline/online decomposition is obtained for discrete operators that allow an efficient evaluation for a certain set of interpolation functionals. ...
